"There are lots of good harnesses currently on the market. My current favourite is the Freedom harness. The freedom harness allows full range of movement but allows you control" - Grisha Stewart M.A. CPDT-KA Internationally renowned dog trainer
Why the Freedom Harness?
I first tried the 2 Hounds Design Freedom Harness after reading a recommendation in Grisha Stewart’s book ‘Behaviour Adjustment Training’. I have since tried it on many of the dogs I have worked with and find it to be well tolerated by the dogs, easy to use by the owner and very effective in helping to control and retrain behaviour. As the harnesses weren’t available in the UK and my clients were having to wait to up to a month to get them from the US I decided to stock them. The harness has numerous features that make me prefer it to the many others available.
It has two lead attachments, one behind the shoulder blades and one on the front of the chest. The attachment between the shoulder blades (see aside) features a patented control loop, which tightens gently around your dog's chest. This gives a clear and consistent but gentle signal to your dog that he is pulling which, when paired with an action that takes away the reward your dog gets from moving forward such as standing still or turning the other way, can kindly teach your dog not to do so.
The front attachment can be used in a similar way. It can also be used with a trained ‘this way’ command to direct your dog away from situations that you want to avoid e.g. triggers that may make your dog bark. This is a short term management tool and does not replace the need for behavioural advice from a qualified behavioural specialist. However it can help control behaviour until that advice is taking effect.
The harness is constructed using stainless steel hardware and four adjustment points to ensure that it is more than strong enough to hold any size dog, from 14 lbs all the way up to 250+ lbs. The chest strap is lined with Swiss Velvet, which helps prevent rubbing and chaffing behind the legs and the straps are all turned out to prevent sores and raw spots along the seams.
The harness is very easy to put on and take off. The harness simply slips over your dog’s head and the straps are then passed under the chest and clipped either side - no need to lift your dog’s legs.
To use the harness to its full potential you will need a double ended training lead. This is not automatically supplied with the harness. I do carry a few of the Freedom Harness patented floating Euro leads if you would like these. Please note I only supply these when bought with a harness.. They are not sold separately. Alternatively double ended leads can be bought freely in pet shops or online.
NB Harness prices do not include the lead.
£3.95 for 1-3 items in the UK and
£5.95 for 1-3 items in the EU. Message for prices elsewhere in the world.
To measure for the harness, use a soft measuring tape (or a piece of string) and measure all the way around the LARGEST part of your dog's chest. Choose the smaller size that fits within that measurement (NB If your dog is still growing choose the larger size that fits within the measurement to allow for growth). . The sizes are:
|Size||Strap Width||Chest Size|
|XS||Extra Small||5/8"||14" - 20" / 31-51cm|
||18 - 24" / 48-61cm|
|M||Medium||5/8" or 1"||22" - 28" / 56-71cm|
|L||Large||1"||26" - 32" / 66-81cm|
|XL||Extra Large||1"||30" - 38" / 76-97cm|
|XXL||Extra Extra Large*||1"||36" - 44" / 91-112cm|
